The Goodwin Mertcantile Company store. The Goodwin Mercantile Company incorporated November 1st, 1916 with 25,000 shares. For many years this was the hub of commerce during the the ups and downs of Gold Hill's mining activity. We are not certain when it was last open for business but we believe sometime in the 1950's. If you have any more info on the Goodwin Mercantile building in Gold Hill, please share!
Gold Hill was settled in 1871, servicing the mines in the neighboring Deep Creek Mountains including those in the Clifton and Gold Hill Mining Districts. The mines were solid producers of gold, silver, lead, copper, silver, gold, tungsten and arsenic (which was utilized during the war effort).
In 1917, following the recent World War I mining boom in the area, the Deep Creek Railroad connected Gold Hill with Wendover to the north. This allowed major shipments of ore and concentrates to the main rail lines and the Victory Highway (now Interstate 80) in Wendover. By 1939 shipments from the mines had severely slowed and the tracks were abandoned and salvaged shortly thereafter. Gold Hill would slip into another slow down until just a few years later when the World War II manufacturing boom would once again demand the minerals found in the neighboring hills.

The Lincoln Highway brought new transportation options to Gold Hill and modern tourism along the nearby historic Pony Express Trail wakes town a bit on the weekends. High gold prices in modern times have prompted renewed mining operations in the Gold Hill area and the Clifton area to the south. Half of the occupied homes in Gold Hill house those working for the Desert Hawk Gold Corp at the nearby Kiewit Mine.
At its height, Gold Hill featured organized streets, food (Home Restaurant and Bakery), (lodging (Hillcrest Hotel), two lumber yards, several general stores (Goodwin Mercantile & the Bertelson's grocery & clothing store), saloons, a pool hall, the Gold Hill Pharmacy, the Liberty Garage, a US Post Office (operated from 1911-1949), an elementary school, a brothel and a newspaper (The Gold Hill Standard 1916-1919). Today many of the buildings are fallen or in major disrepair. Much of the land in and around Gold Hill is private property, please be respectful while exploring.

From Wendover. Take US-93ALT south for 25.6 miles. Turn left onto Ibapah Rd for 16.4 miles. Turn left onto Upper Gold Hill Rd and continue for 11.6 miles, arrive at Gold Hill.
From SLC (via Pony Express Trail). Take the Pony Express Trail 116 miles to Gold Hill (see GPS coordinates above)
